Regular readers of the biscuit reviews might be aware that I'm not a big fan of messing with what's not broken - versions of biscuits with the latest new craze (I see you red velvet - remember that? - orange and salted caramel and even more ridiculously and pointlessly pistachio) really don't work and most of them don't enhance the original at all and often ruin what made the original so good.
So Caramel Penguin? Hear me out here. Caramel biscuits are generally not the best variants - take Caramel Rocky for instance, it's alright, but just that. The Caramel Digestives aren't good because the caramel is thin and hard.
With the Caramel Penguin though McVities have struck gold. There's no real caramel in here, just the taste of it and it's not overpowering, nor is it false tasting and it really works. The chocolate has survived the reduction in cocoa content (necessary if you're selling these for £1 - £2 for 7 when the cocoa price has gone up five-fold because of a poor harvest) and actually the first time I tried these I had to check whether I had a packet from before the reduction. The penguin element is as reliable as ever, an old favourite, crisp and pleasant to bite, despite some minor issues with the wrap quality that thankfully didn't impact the biscuit.
Would I choose these over the original? Yes, I would and do, I wouldn't ordinarily buy Penguin even though they're a great staple biscuit that's always a pleasure but these always find my way into the basket if they're £1 in B&M, Poundland or elsewhere.
DAVE'S SCORE : 9/10
